“Where Are You?” by Joyce Carol Oates

The second story I read was “Where Are You?” by Joyce Carol Oates, which follows the story of a husband and wife. The husband, who is hard of hearing, frequently has to call out to his wife to find her location in their house, who gets frustrated that he cannot hear her. At the end of the story, the wife, whilst calling out to her husband, falls down the stairs and dies, leaving the husband unable to find his wife. I found the length of the story was nice, as each sentence served a purpose in progressing the plot along. With a direct focus on the characters, I felt as though I could easily picture what was happening.
