Hello everyone! For my July blog, I read There's Something about Sweetie, written by Sandhya Menon. If you're looking for a quick and easy read with a heartfelt message, this one's for you!
The story centres around Sweetie Nair and Ashish Patel, two star athletes set up by Ashish's parents. But it's not that simple; Sweetie has been forbidden by her own mother to date Ashish because she is fat, so the two have to go behind her back. Throughout the story, Sweetie has to prove to the world and her mother (and herself) that she is just as worthy as any other skinny girl.
Menon also makes a point in her author's note about we use "fat" and "skinny" as words that hold different emotions. "Fat" is used negatively and it is associated with words such as "lazy," "unhealthy," and " not normal." On the contrary, "skinny" is used positively and is associated with words such as "healthy" and "normal." Our health is frequently associated with our weight, and Menon uses her novel to argue against society's idea that "fat" needs to be fixed because "fat" is bad.
I hope you all enjoy There's Something about Sweetie as much as I did, and maybe reflect on your own internal prejudices on health and weight. Happy reading!!!
