Sweetness

In my first ever blog we will be exploring Sweetness, written by Nobel Prize Winner Toni Morrison!

Welcome to my first blog post, where I will be diving into the writings of different women! There are several features that I look for and will share with you; I love stories with tons of imagery and detailed descriptions. Vivid imagery and and graphic details allow me to imagine the world the author is creating and be fully immersed in the author’s world. I am also enthralled when there are twists and turns with some kind of a dark mystery in stories, as hooks and suspense are definitely favourite features in a story for me; I love when I have to cover up paragraphs with my hand so I do not get spoilers. Another important quality for me is the authenticity of the author’s voice. I resonate with stories where the author or narrator come across with brutal honesty and bluntness. Based on my taste in stories with vivid imagery and detailed descriptions, dark suspense, and authenticity my first recommendation is Sweetness, by Toni Morrison.

Though the entirety of Sweetness is a fictional piece, it’s easy to imagine this could be a true story with real people. You immediately hear the authenticity in the narrator’s voice where the text feels astonishingly raw, truthful and open. The manner and style in which Morrison conveys and portrays the narrator’s emotions is immaculate; it felt like the narrator was a real-life person speaking directly to me, trusting me as a listener with her darkest thoughts on how she resented her own daughter because of the color of her skin. I found the narrator’s brutal honesty to admit these feelings touched me as a reader. After reading that section of the text, I was startled to see how the narrator got even more honest from there; I longed to hear more and more, with the text always having the suspense build up into what was going to be revealed next.
